10 Minutes of Looking into the Distance Every Hour
This has become a new challenge for me recently — and I suspect it’s the same for anyone who works at a computer. My eyes hurt.
When I worked as an occupational doctor, I learned that our eyes can focus up close for about one hour without damage. During that time, the tiny internal eye muscles get tired. Fortunately, they recover within 10 minutes. But if we don’t let them rest, it may lead to headaches and vision issues.
That’s why I always recommended this simple slogan of mine:
“Every hour, look into the distance for ten minutes!”

Really — after one hour, stand up from your screen, walk to the window, and look far away. This allows the eye muscles to return to their relaxed, parallel position instead of the strained close-up state.
Another issue while working at the computer is that we forget to blink. This causes dry eyes, itching, and a burning sensation. We need to consciously remind ourselves to blink. In more serious cases, artificial tears may help — but always consult a doctor first.

Now I’m off… to blink and look into the distance. 🙂
