Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Retractable Hardtop – 1958
The Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner was one of the most ambitious engineering achievements of the late 1950s: the world’s first mass-produced retractable hardtop. Built between 1957 and 1959, it featured a fully automatic roof mechanism that folded the steel hardtop into the trunk. The complex electro-hydraulic system used 7 motors, 10 solenoids, 4 lift jacks, and over 600 feet of wiring.
